Our Mandate

Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) was incorporated on 2nd December 2008 and registered under the Companies Act, Cap 486 pursuant to Sessional paper No. 4 of 2004 on Energy.

KETRACO is 100% Government owned and being a state corporation, it is regulated under the State Corporations Act, Cap 446.

The Company was established to develop new high voltage electricity transmission infrastructure that will form the backbone of the National Transmission Grid, in line with Kenya Vision 2030.

Its core business is to plan, design, build and maintain electricity transmission lines and associated substations. The voltage rating of the  transmission lines include 132kV, 220kV, 400kV and 500kV (HVDC).

The Company will construct over 4,000 km. of high voltage transmission infrastructure comprising of lines, switch gears and sub-stations across the country in the next 3-4 years. This will open up geographical areas without access to the national grid, enhance capacity for evacuating power from planned generating plants and build inter-connectors to facilitate regional power trade with neighboring countries.

Mandate

KETRACO’s mandate is to plan, design, construct, own, operate and maintain high voltage electricity transmission grid and regional power interconnectors that will form the backbone of the National Transmission Grid.
In carrying out this mandate, the Company is expected to develop a new and robust grid system in order to:

  1. Improve quality and reliability of electricity supply throughout the country
  2. Transmit electricity to areas that are currently not supplied from the national grid
  3. Evacuate power from planned generation plants
  4. Provide a link with the neighboring countries in order to facilitate power exchange and develop electricity trade in the region
  5. Reduce transmission losses that currently cost the country heavily every year and
  6. Reduce the cost of electricity to the consumer by absorbing the capital cost of transmission infrastructure
