Who we are

The National Youth Council is one of the state corporations domiciled in the Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs which came into being after the enactment of National Youth Policy (NYP) (2007) and the National Youth Council (NYC) Act (2009). In 2010, the Council was ratified as a corporate body through the Kenya Gazette Notice No. 88 and was operationalized in December, 2012 after a nationwide electoral process.

OUR HISTORY

In 2006, the National Youth Policy was formulated to ensure that youth issues, particularly inclusion through meaningful participation and effective representation would become a reality. Thereafter, the National Youth Council Act was enacted on 31st December 2009, while the president accented to it to become law in 2010.The Act establishes two organs, namely National Youth Council which is a body Corporate and Youth

Advisory Board that has a purely advisory mandate. Members of each of the two organs serve in office for a three-year term.

NYC conducted its first elections in December ,2012 where 16 Board Members of the Council at the national level were elected. The election of the Council Members was gazette on December 11,2012 while that of the Chairperson was done in February 13, 2013.Five Directorate of Youth Affairs Officers were deployed to the NYC Secretariat to assist the Council run its day-to-day affairs effectively. The Secretariat officers are on full-time basis.

The existence of NYC is primarily to champion youth issues by providing leadership that assures inclusion, through participation and representation of youth in all spheres of development. In addition, NYC is actively involved in the processes of formulating policies that directly affect young people. To offer quality service to youth of Kenya, NYC is in the process of establishing devolved NYC structures of operations (offices) at Ward, Sub-county and County levels in every County to ensure that programs to benefit young people roll out well.

The Government of Kenya is keen to adopting international resolutions that concern the youth.
